Aces All City Mentoring Event

On November 13, community professionals will have the opportunity to make a direct and positive impact on the lives of Detroit’s youth. On that day, many Detroit public high schools have agreed to open their classrooms and allow their students to engage in productive dialogue and to receive valuable mentoring. As many of you know, Detroit Public Schools is a district that has many persisting challenges, including student underachievement and low test scores. However recently there has been a strong resurgence of hope; with the upcoming election of a new school board, the building of several new schools, and a more focused effort to increase parental involvement. The community also has a huge responsibility to be a part of the solution in regards to education. The Aces All City Mentoring Event will provide you the opportunity to directly fulfill that responsibility.

Many professionals have very busy schedules and personal lives that prevent them from committing large amounts of time to mentoring youth. Nevertheless, these students need both our time and our example if they are to reach their full potential. We must candidly share our knowledge and experiences with them, giving them a vision that compliments their dreams and ambitions. Ask yourself: If the best and brightest in the community do not share their success with our youth, who will?

November 13 was chosen as the day for this event because it is the only day this fall that the Big 3 automaker employees have a holiday while the schools are in session. The hope is that many of these professionals will choose to voluntarily participate in this event on that day. It would be great to get participation from professionals with various backgrounds, including engineering, business, medicine, law, skilled trades, social work, etc. Please fell free to pass this information along to community and professional organizations. Encourage friends to participate as well.

Meet the volunteers for this event.
